Amy Brooks Gates joined St. Peter Catholic School in 2023 as a second grade teacher. She was born in Baton Rouge and raised in Port Allen, Plaquemine, and Covington, LA. She earned a Bachelor's degree from Southeastern Louisiana University (as well as Kindergarten certification). After completing her undergraduate degree, she taught at St. Peter Elementary, Abita Springs Elementary, Madisonville Elementary School and Lancaster Elementary School as a regular education teacher and also as a teacher of gifted. She later earned a M.ED in Guidance Counseling, as well as gifted certification in the subsequent years from Southeastern Louisiana University. Before coming to St. Peter Catholic School, Amy Gates worked for Lancaster Elementary as the academic teacher of gifted for grades 2 and 3 and subsequently grade 3 alone.
She is honored to teach students in their sacramental year of making their First Confession and First Holy Communion. She loves being able to teach students who are learning about the power of the intercessory prayer of the rosary. It has been her privilege to pray the rosary in earnest over the past thirty years for children of the world (those abandoned, abused, or neglected, and the unborn) as well as all children that she knows and loves. She feels privileged to be accepted to teach at St. Peter Catholic School.
She is married to Thomas Gates and will celebrate her 5oth wedding anniversary on December 4, 2023. She has two grown sons, Timothy and Joseph. She is the author of two books as follows: Pierre and the Petite Guardian Gator and Pierre and the Louisiana Bayou Buddies. These books are Catholic centered books about a Catholic family and their friendships and trials in the aftermath of the Gulf Oil Spill.
Amy has earned the following awards: Order of St. Louis May 1994, My Teacher Award- Slidell Elks Lodge 1997 and Second Runner Up Teacher of the Year Elks Lodge 1997. She has co- chaired and participated in some of the following programs in the past as follows: Friends of the Library(19 yrs), St. Jane Parish CCD (10 years with recognition award) St. Joseph Abbey Oblate for 32 years, has served as alternate gift bearer on Sunday mass at St. Joseph Abbey for 15 years. Other teacher activities include as follows: Rosary Club, Vocation Committee St. Peter Parish, Postal Club, Drama Club, Robotics Club, Creative Writing Club, Community Service classes: Reader’s Theater and Creative Writing.Teacher Leader for Sped. for three years and served on several textbook committees for St. Tammany Parish Public Schools. She loves returning to Catholic education to freely express the beauty of our faith during teaching moments.
